Tianhe District
Located in the eastern outskirts of Guangzhou, Tianhe District is the city's new downtown. Covering an area of 147.7 square kilometres with about half a million residents, Tianhe is home to Guangzhou's newest skyscrapers.

Shamian
More than a century ago, the mandarins of Guangzhou designated a 44-acre sandbank as an enclave for foreign merchants to protect them from local resentment -- at times murderous -- after the Opium Wars. Tading companies from Britain, the United States, France, Holland, Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Japan soon built stone mansions along the waterfront. The neighborhood thrived until the 1949 Revolution, when its buildings were turned into government housing and factories. Today many colonial buildings have been restored, and highlights among them include the old British consulate (now the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangdong province), the former U.S. consulate (now a restaurant), the stately, colonnaded Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, the Banque de l'Indochine and the offices of Butterfield & Swire, and the stuffy old Shamian Club, now the International Club Karaoke Lounge.
