Hong Kong Photo Gallery - Chi Lin Nunnery

While Chi Lin Nunnery looks like a traditional piece of Chinese architecture, the buildings were actually a recent construction. Made entirely of wood in the Tang Dynasty style, the nunnery was completed in 1998 without a single nail. The wood sections lock against each other in the same way as construction methods used hundreds of years ago.

The nunnery made the news in 2012 when the State Administration of Cultural Heritage shortlisted them as a potential candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status despite its relative young age.
