Hong Kong Photo Gallery - Kwun Tong's New Yue Man Fong

The Kwun Tong Town Centre redevelopment was first announced back in 1998. The site covers 5.35 hectares and the government aims to redevelop a series of old and dilapidated buildings into a new civic centre, commercial highrise, and residential quarters, affecting about 5000 residents. Demolition has begun and completion of new buildings will come in stages.

The first section, Development Area 1, consists of a residential highrise that was completed in 2014. The next section, Development Area 2, consists of 4 residential towers that are currently under construction with completion expected in 2021. The commercial area along Kwun Tong Road will include a 285m hotel and office tower, forming Development Areas 4 and 5 that should finish in 2026.

As with these large redevelopment projects, it has taken quite a long time and many small shops run by families have been uprooted. The last shop hung on until May 2021 after lawyers came calling. Questions have arisen over whether we need another mall with the standard chain stores, and whether this type of renewal model is really what we need nowadays?
