The Rideau Canal stretches over 200 km from Ottawa to Kingston. The original purpose
of the canal was to provide a safe supply route between Montreal and the Great
Lakes in case of an American attack. With 24 dams and 6 locks, the canal
was built between 1826 and 1832 following the War of 1812. In the winter, 8 km
of the canal in Ottawa is transformed into the longest outdoor skating
rink in the world.
