The Peranakans are descendents from the Straits Chinese community who married Malays and the British. The result was a fusion culture. The Pinang Peranakan Mansion was the ornate home of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee. Built in the late 19th century, it is now a museum of antiques from the Peranakan / Nyoyian community.

The Cathedral of the Assumption has been a place of worship since the mid-19th century.

St. George's Church was built in 1818 in the Palladian Georgian style for the Anglican community.
