Created in a city reorganization in 1990, Xinyi became a new planned business district, and is now home to upscale malls, skyscraper offices, and fancy hotels.

In an earthquake-prone part of the world, the Taiwanese decided to build a 508m skyscraper, the tallest in the world at the time when it opened in 2004. Taipei 101 was designed by Taiwanese architect C. Y. Lee to resemble a bamboo shoot rising.
