Introduction |
With some 300 shops, the Eaton Centre was originally named after the Eaton's department store, which went bankrupt in the 1990's and was bought by Sears. Even though the original Eaton's is now gone, the shopping centre's name remains today. The Eaton Centre is the largest shopping complex in the downtown core. It opened in 1979. The Eaton Centre is not only a shopping centre, but also contains office buildings on top of the mall. (bottom photos)

Massey Hall |
In 1892, industrial baron Hart Massey (1823-96) bought land at Shuter and Victoria Streets and hired architect Sidney Badgley to design a memorial to his son Charles Albert Massey. Massey intended his "gift to aid in the development of the arts" to be "an auditorium -- spacious, substantial and comfortable, where public meetings, conventions, musical and other entertainments could be given."
Declared a "heritage" building during the 1970s, Massey Hall remains a vital part of Toronto's cultural and entertainment scene. |

Dundas Square |
Dundas Square opened in November 2002 as part of an urban redevelopment project next to the Eaton Centre. The square is made of large granite slabs that cover most of the 1 acre space. 22 fountains are placed along the southern edge of the square. An entrance canopy extends along Dundas Street on the northern side. Beneath the canopy is a ticket booth for theatre, dance, comedy, opera, and music performances.
