| On January 1st, 1998, the new City of Toronto was born with the amalgamation of 7 municipalities in the Metropolitan Toronto area. The mayor of North York, Mel Lastman , was elected to be mayor of the new Toronto, with a population of 2.4 million. Lastman envisoned North York's main corridor, Yonge Street , which is the city's main east-west dividing line, to be the hub of a new mini-downtown. In recent years, this area around the North York City Centre has seen much redevelopment, with many new condominum projects under construction along Yonge Street. | ||
