New Town is primarily a commercial district with bank offices, shopping malls, and restaurant options.

A supermarket occupies the first floor of YK Centre. Prices are not significantly inflated from the southern cities. Eating out can get quite expensive, with simple meals easily running into CAD $15. So if your hotel has a microwave, just get a TV dinner at the supermarket and heat it up for a delicious meal and save 75%.

Not far from the main thoroughfare, Franklin Avenue, the density tapers off dramatically with houses on spacious lots. New Town is not a big area being only a few blocks long and not too deep.

While the roads and sidewalks are not shovelled to their concrete or asphalt surfaces, it was not icy or slippery when walking around in snow boots.

This log cabin was built in 1937 and became a school, although it has been relocated here from another location.

Be sure to stop at City Hall to obtain a free pin and certificate that you have visited above 60 degrees. Afterwards, exit into Somba K'e Park for the 5-minute walk to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.

The museum has several galleries of exhibits and wonderful heating to warm up after a long walk outside.

The indigeneous peoples living here know how to keep warm!

Law enforcement has an interesting history in the North. Historically, the indigeneous groups governed themselves, and there was some friction when the white man arrived and imposed their laws on them. Nevertheless, the locals helped these foreigners survive in the cold north.

One gallery showcases the various wildlife in the polar regions.

The mooseskin boat was popularly used in the late 1800s to the 1950s to carry cargo along the rivers. This example was built in 1981 and is the largest artifact in the museum.

The Legislative Assembly is a further 5 minute walk from the museum through some beautiful parkland.

The Legislative Assembly building opened in 1993 on the shores of Flame Lake. While official tours only take place once a day on weekdays, it is possible to do a self-guided tour with a pamphlet from the information desk. The government in the Northwest Territories is unique in Canada as it is not party-based. Enter into the spacious Great Hall, which can be booked for non-profit activities, such as weddings.

This mace was created in 1999 after Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. Made of silver and bronze, the mace weighs 12kg and is topped by a 1.3 carat diamond.

The final stop of the tour was above the meeting chamber.
