Amsterdam's Golden Age was during the 17th century, when the cargo trade blossomed. During this time, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) played a major and profitable role in the Europe-Asia trade, having been granted a trade monopoly by the government. The Dutch had a colony in the East Indies, or today's Indonesia.
