Antwerp Photo Gallery - Sint Paulus

Located in the old sailor's district, St. Paul was built in the 16th century in the Gothic style, although its history goes back to 1243 when the Dominicans first arrived in Antwerp. They consecrated their 30 foot-tall church in 1276. Archaeologists found remnants of this church 3.7m beneath the current floor.

The current church was built as a monastery at the time of the city's golden age, but the Dominicans were banished by the Calvinist government in 1579, and the site was confiscated a year later. The interiors we see today are more recent, with furniture and art mainly from the 17th century.

With a modest admission charge, head in and be amazed.

While part of the interior is covered up for renovation, there is still quite a lot to see and there are staff on hand to answer your questions.
