Bilbao Photo Gallery - Mundaka

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a popular place to visit as a day trip out of Bilbao. However, it is quite difficult to reach by public transport although there are many tours that visit this coastal hermitage along with the fishing villages of Bermeo and Mundaka as well as the historic town of Gernika.

Given my 2 night trip only, I didn't want to devote an entire day for this so I had to compromise. The 3 towns are all on the suburban train line out of Bilbao so I decided to visit them on my own and drop the hermitage.

Mundaka was the last stop on this half day trip. Just a few minutes by train from Bermeo, this fishing village is still on the Bay of Biscay coastline so there are beautiful sea views and great waves for surfing.

My first stop was Santa Catalina, a hermitage perched on a hill overlooking the sea.

The town itself was quiet with pretty houses and a fishing port full of nice yachts. It's a bit smaller than Bermeo and far less crowded so offers a different experience.

On the other side of the port is the parish church of Santa Maria, which also overlooks the sea.
