The Fourth Ward was an upscale residential district in the 19th century where merchants, ministers, and more called home. Located in the northwest and spanning 30 city blocks, its decline started in the mid-20th century after the trolley's expansion allowed suburban development.Restoration efforts to save the neighbourhood arrived in 1976, and today's Fourth Ward has returned to being a charming historic residential community. 229 N. Poplar Street was previously Saint Peters hospital. The 1878 building is now a residential building.
229 N. Church Street is a 1905 building that was initially a medical college.
N. Poplar Street has many historic residential homes one after another.
Neighbouring streets also have a fair share of historic homes and well-manicured parks. Many homeowners have even added water features to their front gardens. You know it's a good area when the owners take care of their front yards with beautiful displays.
513 N. Pine dates from the 1880s with a Charleston Gable at the front.
Nearby 519 was built a bit later and has a storage closet inside for apples.
504 was built in 1895 as a wedding gift for a builder's son.
The bungalow at 523 was built for the mother-in-law.
The Berryhill House was built in 1884 and became the first renovation project in the mid-1970s by the Junior League, symbolizing the ward's rebirth.
Diagonally across the street is the Crowell-Berryhill store from 1897 until 1931 and is now a restaurant.
The beautiful house tour continues along West 9th Street.
West 10th Street also has a few landmarks. The apartments at 301 date from 1930 in the Jacobean Revival style.
Across the street are a set of rowhouses in different colours.
At 326 is a Classic Greek Revival style house that was not originally here before 1981 and now serves as offices.
With a large residential community, it's not surprising there is also a lot of choice for worship with several churches within walking distance. The First United Methodist Church dates from 1928 and was built with limestone from Indiana.
St. Peter's Episcopal Church was built in the 1890s in the Victorian Gothic style.
The First Presbyterian Church's history goes back to the 1820s and served the Scottish and Irish communities with further extensions until the end of the 19th century.
The Mayfair Manor apartment hotel was built in 1929 with 100 rooms, and later became the Dunhill Hotel with only 60 rooms.
