Copenhagen Photo Gallery - Torvehallerne

Torvehallerne consists of 2 indoor market halls with an outdoor area in between. An old vegetable market had stood on Israels Plads until 1958, and the City Council supported bringing back a market here in 2001, which opened in 2011.

Arriving for a late lunch, it was still extremely busy and the outdoor seating area was pretty much full. Nevertheless, I explored the many small independent shops and the wide variety of goods on offer.

From Norreport metro station, there is a direct exit to the market through an unmarked walkway, which will save you a little time by not using the main staircase.

The 2 open sandwich shops were quite busy. Both offer individual pricing but also set deals for a few pieces. Smørrebrød classics include pickled herring, prawn, and chicken salad on rye bread. Its history dates back to the 19th xentury when farm workers packed rye bread and dinner leftovers for the next day's lunch.

Outside, the fruits and vegetables are beautifully laid out with a maze of colours.
