St Nicholas' Church is right on the Korenmarkt in the heart of the historic centre that was once favoured by the merchant class. Its history goes back to the 13th century and boasts a unique lantern tower above the crossing of the nave and transepts to allow light in.
The Church of St. John the Baptist was converted in the 15th and 16th centuries to Saint Bavo's Cathedral at a time when the city was rich, powerful, and wanted larger and more extravagant churches. What we see today is the 3rd church on the site, with a 82m-high tower that marks it as one of the 3 towers in Ghent's medieval skyline.
Begijnhofkerk Sint-Elisabeth is to the west of Ghent's historic centre. This was once a large beguinage, although its canals have been filled in and parts redeveloped. The church dates from the early 17th century.
