Gruyères Photo Gallery

Gruyères is a great day trip from Montreux if you like cheese. It is an easy train ride on a special train through beautiful mountain scenery to Montbovon, followed by a change to a commuter train.

The Golden Pass train was empty on this weekday service, although during peak times, the tourist brochures recommend booking in advance. The journey is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.

At Montbovon, it was a short wait for the commuter train's departure. The trains are timed to allow for these connections.

An hour and 15 minutes later, I arrived at the cheese factory just across from the train station. Entry is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, and you also get 3 types of their cheese to enjoy.

After watching the videos and going through the small museum, it was time to head uphill to the historic Medieval town.

The town centre consists of a long wide street of simply homes on either side. No narrow alleys here.

The castle dates from the 13th century and has a commanding view of the mountains and valleys. Similar to the cheese factory, admission is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
