The other vantage point from above is artificial. The 107m Goryokaku Tower was built to offer visitors a view of the star-shaped fort. This Western-style defense structure was completed about 150 years ago.

The park is a major cherry blossom viewing spot with about a thousand trees. I came more or less at a good time as blooming has just started.

Mount Hakodate and the observation deck are in the distance.

Downstairs, the viewing mats are ready and the parties should start in days. Hokkaido is the last part of Japan to see cherry blossoms due to its northern location.

We're not really at full bloom yet.

Back in the city, the Morning Market consists of some 300 shops selling your everyday food essentials. Surrounded by ocean, there is plenty of seafood available in Hakodate at very reasonable prices.

Sea urchin, anyone?

Have you tried squid fishing in a tank?

I settled for a delicious scallop instead - freshly grilled.

The tram is the main mode of transport used by tourists. There are 2 lines, and a day pass will be cheaper if you ride more than 3 times.
