Lai Chi Chong is located on the southeastern shores of the Tolo Channel with many interesting volcanic sedimentary rocks. From the ferry pier, enter the beach and take a 1km roundtrip hike to explore the different rock types, such as tuff, tuffite, siltstone, siliceous siltstone and carbonaceous siltstone. This area experienced heavy volcanic activity some 146 million years ago, when volcanic ash fell and settled into a lake, forming tuffite rock, a rare type in Hong Kong. An infrequent kaito ferry service reaches Lai Chi Chong from Ma Liu Shui near Shatin. Alternatively, you can take a minibus from Sai Kung bound for Hoi Ha and hike from Pak Sha O for about 3.5km.
Just offshore are a few small uninhabited islands.
The village itself is a bit further inland past the mangroves and away from the coastal tides. At high tide, many trees are submerged into the sea. From the pier, it's a short walk along the coastal path.
