Look Closer and Wonder: Central and Western District in Miniature

22 pieces of miniature Hong Kong, of which 9 being new, were on display at Admiralty's Pacific Mall to celerbrate Hong Kong's 27th handover anniversary in late June and early July 2024.

The theme is on Central and Western districts, the political, economic, and cultural heart of the city.

I thought I've seen this group of street stalls in a previous exhibition. This type of dining scene has almost entirely disappeared under the government's crackdown on unsanitary street food.

Central Market is a successful rejuvenation project although it took a very long time to transform into the modern shopping mall we see today.

I also recall seeing this market on a long staircase before as well.

There is a large model of the skyline with a changing electronic background behind it.

The Peak Tram is now a tourist favourite, and this model train actually moves!

The Duddell Street model is in 1:24 scale and features its famous gas lamps and is populated with figures and scenes from local movies and television dramas.

The traditional Chinese restaurant is packed with circular tables that make it easy to share the dishes.

Central's landscape rises quickly behind the skyscrapers and these staircase scenes are quite typical and atmospheric.

A few other local historic buildings are also on display to go with the exhibition's theme.

Lan Kwai Fong used to be Central's pub district, bustling with bankers and professionals after a long day at work. However, the pandemic has killed the street and with an expat exodus, business hasn't really gotten back to normal after the borders reopened.

With deep pockets, why not try a fancy Japanese restaurant for lunch?

A few models showcase life in the city, such as living in a public housing estate and what a classroom looks like.

A few more models look familiar and perhaps inherited from past exhibitions. Miniature exhibitions have been a regular feature in recent years with a few malls hosting these events.
