The Plover Cove Reservoir is the second largest reservoir in Hong Kong. It is the first fresh water reservoir in the world to be carved out of the sea. Construction began in 1960 and finished in 1968, providing a capacity of 170 million cubic metres. Work on raising the height of the dams began in 1970. Upon completion in 1973, reservoir capacity was increased to 230 million cubic metres. The dam stretches 2 km and provides a view of Ma On Shan and Shatin across the Tolo Harbour.
