Chiswick House was built in the early 18th century to showcase art and to entertain for the 3rd Earl of Burlington. He was inspired by his Grand Tour to France and Italy in 1714-5 and 1719. He was especially passionate about architecture, so when the existing house was damaged by fire in 1725, he had an opportunity to design something new.
The conservatory is home to the country's oldest collection of camellias, while the large landscaped gardens was the birthplace of the English Landscape Movement.
Chiswick Mall along the waterfront has a very village feel but with nice-looking residential lowrises and even a brewery.
