"The Spirit of the Bullring lives on ..." (Feb 2025)

The Bullring occupied the tunnels between Waterloo Station and the South Bank, where there was a large community of homeless people spanning 20 years. They built shelters using basic materials such as cardboard, pallets, and more, while nearby St. John's Waterloo provided daytime support to these residents. This exhibition showcases their stories.

Many photographs are hung on the crypt's brick walls. The colours contrasted very well, giving a sombre feeling to match to the subject matter.

Dubbed "Cardboard City", up to 200 people were staying in the area in the mid-1980s. They were ultimately evicted by court order in 1998. Those same tunnels can be accessed by the public today (BBC news item).
