David Hockney: A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting

Born in Bradford, David Hockney's iPad paintings are on display at the Serpentine. Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry and Chinese scroll paintings, this huge work hugs the building's 4 walls to show changing seasons at his former studio in Normandy.

While the studio was being built, he painted the outdoors on his iPad. Using digital tools is not new for him; he had experimented with Photoshop, iPhone, and started using the iPad in 2010.

This exhibition showcases about half of over 200 iPad paintings of the Normandy countryside.

Also on display are a recent set of paintings from late 2025 with a common feature of a checkered tablecloth.
