The River Lea meanders and loops around before emptying into the Thames just east of Canary Wharf. Leamouth Peninsula is formed by the river's course and used to host industrial facilities from glass works to iron works and wharves. Pura Foods opened a refinery for vegetable oils to produce margarine until 2006.These brownfields have been redeveloped into London City Island, home to new residential buildings as well as the English National Ballet. This long and narrow peninsula doesn't have wide roads running through the buildings. Instead, the central spine is pedestrianized, while a 80m red footbridge connects with Canning Town station on the Jubilee Line and DLR across the river. This project created over 1700 new homes.
Some redevelopments have also appeared along nearby riverbanks although there are still plenty of empty plots to build.
You can see the site's fairly linear and narrow shape here.
The 93,000 square foot English National Ballet opened in 2019 and is 4 times the size of their former home in South Kensington.
Being a narrow peninsula, there are plenty of spots to see the river.
