London Photo Gallery - Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum's collection started with Sir Hans Sloane selling his collection of over 71,000 items to the government for 20,000 pounds upon his death in 1753. They were initially put on display at the British Museum, but with insufficient space, a separate building was needed to house these items.

A terracotta design was adopted in light of the climate and the Romanesque building was designed to showcase Victorian explorers' new finds from all over the empire, opening in 1881.

Outside the main entrance is the new Evolution Garden that opened in 2024. Costing 25 million pounds, the revamped 5-acre area has been landscaped to mimick a journey through Earth's natural history set against humanity's influence over it.
