THe Old Kent Road area in southeast London is being gradually revitalized into a new residential and business district. Buoyed by a potential Bakerloo Line extension through the area that is still not funded, the shovels are already in the ground with some plots being transformed into new highrise residences.Currently, this area is one of the most ethnically diverse places in Southwark with visible minorities accounting for over 60% of the 35,000 population. On the masterplan are 20,000 new homes with at least 7000 of them affordable. The proposed Bakerloo Line extension will have 2 stations here, while an additional 10,000 jobs are expected to be generated.
Brimmington Park's outdoor sporting area has a bit of a graffiti problem.
I headed back out to Old Kent Road for a walk towards Elephant and Castle. It's a varied mix of housing, big box stores, empty lots, and more undesirable uses. While there are proper sidewalks, it's not exactly a nice place to go for a walk, and not much of interest to entice you to be there.
6 buildings are planned at the Ruby Triangle development with the tallest rising to 48 and 40 stories.
There are a few more under construction projects scattered along the street.
