Rotherhithe's Thames Path runs along the south side of the river, initially offering beautiful views of Canary Wharf's skyline without the tourist crowds. From Greenland Dock, it is an easy and well-marked journey upstream towards Rotherhithe Overground station. Only a small portion is diverted into the streets with the vast majority of pavement right along the riverfront. The path mostly parallels Rotherhithe Street, the longest street in London. Most of the architecture dates from after World War II due to wartime damage.
Nelson Dock's history dates to the 17th century and was used for shipbuilding until 1968. Today, there are revitalized buildings from the Mills and Knight ship repairers, who were based here from 1886 until the docks closed. Look out for a historic Georgian house which was built for one of the owners.
Continuing north on Rotherhithe Street, I soon found another opening back to the Thames Path and riverfront in between newer residential buildings.
