The Grade II-listed Space House near Holborn station is currently a vacant building being given a new life. Designed by British architects Richard Siefert and George Marsh and completed in 1968, the site includes a cylindrical tower and a rectangular block made of precast modules, making construction faster and cheaper. They're examples of Brutalism, an architectural style denoted by raw concrete, geometric forms, and utilitarian looks that were fuelled by affordable and functional needs in the post-war era.Currently under revitalization by Squire and Partners, the original concrete exterior is being retained with only parts of the facade being replaced. Space House underwent renovations in 1996 and 2003 and the current work intends to remove these intervention layers to expose the original architecture. A penthouse is also being added with an outdoor terrace.
The taller building is named The Tower, which provides 168,000 square feet of office space across its 17 stories. The rectangular block is named The Block, which rises 8 floors and offers 58,000 square feet of office space.
