Just a short walk east of the City and Liverpool Street station, the density drops off dramatically. It consisted of a path in the countryside leaving London east of the Augustinian Priority of St. Mary Spital, which gave the name Spitalfields to the area. The area was urbanized in the latter part of the 17th century, and became home to waves of immigrants from Protestant Huguenot refugees to Russian Jews and Bengalis. There has been a market around Spitalfields since the late 1600s, when it operated 2 days a week to supply fresh fruits and vegetables. The market moved to Stratford in 1991, but the site has been revitalized into a modern shopping and foodie destination.
Besides the revitalized market, neighbouring side streets also have plenty of shops and restaurants for a good browse, and a few residential buildings as well.
