London Transport Museum Photo Gallery

The London Transport Museum moved to the current site in Covent Garden in 1980. While it is not a large site, it is packed with exhibits from historic items to vintage buses. In addition to this site, their depot in suburban Acton Town opens several times a year. This page showcases various historic posters, starting from the Art Deco period, the golden age of design. Flourishing between the two World Wars, it was popular at a time when pictorial posters were a major form of mass advertising. A large number of posters were commissioned to promote the network. By the 1920s, the Underground was a major player in high-quality poster art in the country. During the 1920s and 1930s, leisure time became more important with new public holidays and paid leave. Posters suggested new activities using public transport.
