Nicknamed the Walkie Talkie Building, 20 Fenchurch Street opened in 2014 and made its mark on London's skyline with its unique concave shape. It made headlines when light reflecting off its glass melted cars parked nearby. At the top of the building is the publicly-accessible Sky Garden, which is a free indoor and outdoor observation deck with landscaped vegetation, a fairly common feature amongst The City's new skyscrapers, but with more greenery than the competition. Pre-booking a visit is essential, with tickets fairly difficult to come by and you need to book well in advance.
There is a dedicated entrance on the west side of the building along Philpot Lane. There was a long line already by the time I arrived ahead of my booked time slot and we moved slowly through the security check and for the elevators. The crowd was quite big and the public space was bursting with people despite being a weekday.
While the landscaped garden is beautiful, the immense crowds made it difficult to enjoy the views. I would recommend visiting the other higher, but more simpler free observation decks in the area.
