Wisteria is a climbing plant that flowers in the spring shortly after cherry blossoms and magnolias bloom.
Wisteria is native to China, Japan, and the eastern United States. This plant was first brought to Britain from China and planted at the Griffin Brewery in 1816 outside what was then the Head Brewer's cottage. Kew Gardens also received a sapling but it couldn't grow successfully.
Many individual homeowners in the wealthier West End neighbourhoods have planted and maintained wisteria plants on their exterior walls to produce beautiful results in the spring.
Given these are in residential neighbourhoods, mutual respect is key to enjoy these beautiful scenes, such as keeping noise to a minimum, not blocking doors, and staying on the right side of any barriers.
