Montréal Photo Gallery - Markets

Originally the Marché du Nord, this market's name was changed in 1983 to honour Jean Talon, the first intendant of New France. It is home to many local fruit and vegetable growers, as well as a specialty store selling local Quebec products.

I was quite impressed by the variety of foods in cans and jars available in the specialty store, from honeycrisp syrup and marinated spruce tips to maple butter. These aren't the standard souvenirs you will get in more touristy areas.

Just a short walk from Lionel-Groulx metro station, the Art Deco Atwater Market takes its name from a 19th century businessman and city councillor. It opened in 1933 and includes both an indoor market and an outdoor seasonal section.

Arriving in mid-October, a huge pumpkin market was set up outside with plenty of selection to choose from.

It is also apple season, so there were plenty of those fruits on offer.

Inside and warming up, I found many shops selling meats, foie gras, preserves, and baked goods.
