Colaba, Queen's Necklace & Uptown

This is a must-see if you are in Mumbai. Completed in 1923, the Gateway of India was built to greet the British royals' visit to the India colony. The last British troops also departed from here when colonialism came to an end. Heavy security presence can be seen as the area is cordoned off from the nearby streets.

The Taj Mahal Palace was built before the Gateway of India and continues to be a venerable institution today. It got famous internationally for all the wrong reasons when terrorists captured it and sustained their fight inside for several days in 2008.

Head upstairs in the old wing for a lovely afternoon tea overlooking the ocean. By this time of day, the boats to Elephanta would have finished for the day.

The Queen's Necklace fronts the ocean on the other side of town, about a 20 minute walk from the Taj. Here, the pavement is a bit more spacious and you can sit along the breakwater to watch the sun set.

My search for a unique vantage point above the city met with success. The Four Seasons is further uptown and has a rooftop bar with lovely views of the ocean and the city.

The outdoor bar opens at 5:30pm, just in time for sunset during the dry season. Below are the slums, which are within walking distance from the hotel.

The cost of your drink will probably feed quite a number of households down below for the day.

The Bandra Kurla Complex is a new business development for companies to enjoy modern offices which were becoming a rarity in south Mumbai. It is still a project under construction.
