Norway Road Trip Photo Gallery - From Ålesund to Kristiansund, The Atlantic Road

Ålesund is a good base to explore the 8 km-long Atlanterhavsvegen, a scenic drive along an engineering marvel. Take the E39 out of the city towards Vestnes, where you will transfer to a ferry to Molde.

Norway's car ferries can offer a lot of nice amenities on board. This one has a large lounge area where you can grab a bite and enjoy the scenery. You are not trapped in your car at all.

A chocolate bar costs almost 4 USD. Prices in Norway are indeed very high.

On the other side, Molde is nicknamed the "town of roses".

Take the 64 and 663 north to Bud, where the Atlanterhavsvegen begins. The highway was needed to transport fishing products for export, and work began in 1983. Opened in 1989, the road includes many bridges linking various islands along its 36km. There are some nice short hikes along the way, such as around Askevagen Bay.

Take your time stopping before and after the bridges and observe the fishermen at work and the many other tourists around.

In 2017, an architecture and landscape competition was held to build a viewing platform and service building at Eldhusøya. The winning entry was completed in 2014 and includes a 700m circular walking path.

From the end of the series of bridges, you are just a short drive to Kristiansund.
