Once Norway's capital, the medieval city is hard to find nowadays after fire and wars during the 17th century. With a student population of over 30,000 out of a population of 193,000, this city does feel a bit young.

Start your old town tour at the Nidaros Cathedral, whose history dates back to the 12th century. Not much was left when restoration began in the late 1860s, but it is nevertheless very important as it houses the Norwegian crown jewels.

The more modest Church of Our Lady was restored in 1739 although parts date from the 12th century as well.

It is just a short walk down the street to StiftsgÄrden, the royal residence made of wood. Completed in 1778, it was originally built for a grand lady, who sold it to the governmnent in 1800 for the diocese, finally becoming the royal residence in 1906. The tour guide mentioned in the past, furniture had to be borrowed rom the city's bourgeoisie when the royals came to town occasionally.

The Ravnkloa Fish Market is quite small but an interesting place to grab a snack. Make sure you turn around the corner to see the historic fishing equipment on display.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the town centre :

The city is built around the mouth of the Nidelva River. A promenade extends along one stretch of river next to the main train station, offering nice views of the colourful buildings along this waterfront.

I settled in a riverfront restaurant to enjoy their tasting menu. Of interest was the whale meat, which was heavily marinated. After this dish, I still don't really know what whale tastes like.

Along a different stretch of Nidelva riverfront are historic wharves, warehouses, and boathouses that have been restored with bright colours. The oldest buildings date from the 18th century.

Head uphill to Kristiansten Fort, built after a major city fire in 1681. You will get an unobstructed view of the city from up here, just as defending forces had in 1718 when Swedish invaders arrived.

Have you been to hell? The village of Hell is 30km from the city, and their train station is now popular with English-speaking tourists.
