Porto Photo Gallery - City Scenes III

Once a desolate cargo area, the riverfront promenade known as the Ribeira (#3) is now a vibrant destination for foodies and sightseers. On the other side of the Douro are the port wineries, some of which offer tours and a taste of their product.

The Ponte de Dom Luis I was completed in 1886 and has 2 levels. Metro trains use the top deck while regular traffic runs below much closer to the river level.

The imposing building on the right is Casa do Infante, the birthplace of Prince Henry the Navigator in 1394.

Satisfied, I headed back west to explore the lesser-frequented parts of the riverfront, then uphill through a number of interesting alleys.

This section isn't as touristy with just a few fishermen enjoying the views.

After weaving through narrow alleys back uphill, I reached the Palacio de S Joao Novo.

A further ascent was rewarded with more pleasant views.

After a number of winding alleys, I emerged at a large open square fronting the Centro Portugues de Fotografia, which dates from the 1760s and once was a prison.
