Portsmouth's most unique visual landmark is the Spinnaker Tower, a 170m-tall structure with an observation deck at the top. The whole city is at your footsteps and you can easily see out to the Isle of Wright on a clear day. However, both its viewing levels have tinted windows so the scenery looks a little odd with a weird tone.
The historic dockyard is probably worth most of a day in itself, with various ships you can visit and museums to go along with them. It is so big that they even have a 12-month ticket so you can return as many times as you want.
Portsmouth Harbour station is just next to the tower and the train tracks end right at the seafront. The journey into London from here can take as little as 1.5 hours.
The neighbouring area, including Gunwharf Quays, is a modern shopping and residential district with serene coastal walks.
If you want to take a classic sea voyage instead of flying, consider ferries that leave from here to France and Spain.
Portsmouth also has ferries to the Isle of Wright that take both passengers and cars.
