Old Portsmouth is only a short walk away from Gunwharf Quays and is a quiet neighbourhood of historic buildings in what appears to be a real residential area. I entered the old port (Camber) area along Feltham Row, where there are relatively new homes with small gardens backing into the sea view.
Exiting that pedestrian street, I would see the Square Tower, which was built in 1494 and is now a wedding venue. But there is a small exit where you can walk along the promenade behind it and enjoy the sea breeze.
The Royal Garrison Church's history dates back some 8 centuries and was once a hospital, hostel, ammunition store, and church. Built in the early 13th century by the Bishop of Winchester, it was badly damaged in 1941 and was closed for restoration during my visit.
These side streets are residential and I was surprised there were few tourists roaming around.
A block away on High Street stands St. Thomas, whose oldest section dates from the 12th century and has expanded many times since.
