Riga Photo Gallery - Sigulda

With only 2 days in Riga, it was a bit of a rush to get to Sigulda and I had to keep watch on time so not to rush for my flight that evening. So it was an early start with the aim of making this a half day trip only. The grand surprise was the fall colours, with plenty of beautiful foliage all round, making the Livonian Order Castle even more special.

Sigulda was ruled by the Livonians from the 11th to 13th centuries, who initially built wood defense structures. The stone castle was built in the early 13th century but destroyed during war, becoming a manor. From here, there are wonderful views of the forest along the Gauja Valley.

The Borch family assumed ownership in 1780, and the manor became a dowry when one of the Borch daughters got married in 1867. The New Castle was built following the wedding in 1881.
