Singapore Chinatown Photo Gallery

Just south of Chinatown, the Tanjong Pagar area is seeing a lot of construction activity.

Many renovated and repainted shophouses line the streets. Some of the paint is so fresh you can't tell how old are the buildings anymore.

Amidst the lowrises is a new highrise public housing community called Pinnacle @ Duxton.

Keong Saik Road used to be a red light district, but it is now a trendy neighbourhood of cafes and restaurants. Tong Ah Eating House is set in a triangular building. The original cheap restaurant moved out to a nearby location, but the 1939 building still houses a restaurant.

Chinatown is not just a place for the Chinese, but also to the Indians and Muslims as well.

Muslims also have a place of worship in Chinatown.

Jinrikisha Station was built in 1903 as a rickshaw depot for registration and inspection. This form of transportation was popular back in the day, with about 13,000 in the 1890s and over 22,000 by 1902. Built in the Edwardian style with bricks and white plaster blended together, the structure had to be built in the V-style to match the site's dimensions. Rickshaws were finally banned in 1947, and the building was repurposed into a clinic and health care centre. Today, it is owned by Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan and hosts a number of shops and restaurants.
