Taipei's main international airport in Taoyuan is a fairly old facility although now they're in the midst of building a new Terminal 3 to bring it closer to its neighbours that have built sparkling new airports.
Terminal 1 opened in 1979 but despite improvements to the check-in hall and immigration areas, the gates are pretty much the same structure as when it opened with lots of staircases and low ceilings.
Terminal 2 is more modern, having opened in 2000.
To improve the passenger experience, a number of gates in both terminals have been thematically decorated. Some are familiar to everyone such as Hello Kitty, while others incorporate local Taiwanese topics such as food and the Alishan railway.
