Tallinn Photo Gallery - Random Exploration #2

With only a day in town, it is difficult to take in the history museums while doing my type of exploration into every alley and street. While the historic centre is small, there are many historic churches within.

The Town Hall Square was the centre of the city for 800 years, where goods from around the world were traded during the town's days as a prosperous Hanseatic port.

Town Hall's Gothic look dates back to the early 15th century although the previous town hall building also stood here back in the 14th century.

The Holy Spirit Church dates from the 13th century and hosts the city's oldest public clock.

The tram line and a wide avenue runs at the edge of the historic centre. I spared some time tram spotting as well even though I didn't need to ride public transport during my day trip.

Heading back into the historic area, Niguliste Church's history dates to the 13th century but the structure you see today is primarily from the 15th. It is believed that the church survived the Reformation riots in 1524 because the church was sealed shut with melted lead, saving the medieval art inside. However, it was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt.

It is easy to spot the key attractions in the Lower Town from many street corners.
