Buttonville Municipal Airport was primarily used for general aviation and training and closed in late 2023 as the lease with Cadillac Fairview came to an end. Located in Markham next to the busy Highway 404, it is now surrounded by suburban Markham. Nav Canada, the agency that operates air traffic control and the civil navigation system, decided in 2018 to remove control tower staff here. The 67 hectare site will be redeveloped into an industrial zone, although the initial 2011 plan called for a mix of residential and commercial buildings.Buttonville's history dates back to 1953 with a grassy airstrip. It was bought by the Sifton family in 1963 and has since nutured aspiring pilots, home to over 300 flying clubs over the years.
The area east and south of it already houses many industrial buildings.
