These older CLRV/ALRV streetcars have been running on Toronto's streets for over 30 years and are due for retirement. They were built between 1977 and 1989 and cannot keep up with new ridership and accessibility needs. Streetcars run on 11 routes over 82km, carrying 285,000 passengers a day.

In 2009, Bombardier was awarded a $1 billion contract to supply 204 new streetcars to the city. With ongoing manufacturer delays and reliability issues, the full order won't be completely delivered until 2019.
