Heading north from Perth, at the 1.5 hour mark is the town of Lancelin, which is famous for a 2km-long sand dune, the biggest in the state.
The town itself has greenery and an empty beach fronting the Indian Ocean.
Another 1 hour north is the highlight of the day. Nambung National Park is home to the Pinnacles, a desert area with numerous limestone formations created through erosion over millions of years. A hard one-way track allows cars to navigate through the landscape with parking areas where you can get off and explore.
A thorough visit of the driving circuit takes about 3-4 hours. While there are no barriers set up against pedestrians, be mindful not to touch the limestone formations and take photos from a safe distance. As the area is not shaded, put on lots of sunscreen beforehand.
