Indian Ocean Drive Photo Gallery #4
Hutt Lagoon / Pink Lake

An hour's drive from the Chapman Valley is the edge of Hutt Lagoon. Before seeing its pink waters, stop at the Lynton Convict Hiring Depot, which was established in 1853 for the Geraldine Mine. It was expensive to keep this outpost given the remoteness, poor soils, and the decline of mining. The depot closed in 1857.

For the best view of the pink lake at lunch time, head to the west side along Port Gregory Road. Hutt Lagoon's unique colour is caused by its high salinity and algae content. You don't necessarily need to take a helicopter ride to see the colours.

After all the selfies, return the way you came back to George Grey Dr to continue up the coast.
