Xian Photo Gallery - Banpo Neolithic Village

Just outside of the city centre but now on the metro line with a station bearing the same name, Banpo Neolithic Village is an archaeological site believed to date from around 6000 years ago. The site was accidentally discovered in 1953 and a museum was established in 1958. This place was important enough to have hosted national leaders over the years.
Today, visitors can see uncovered areas for pottery production, residences, and a cemetery.
The Banpo villagers belonged to the Neolithic Yangshao culture. They used tools made with stone and animal bone, cultivated millet, and domesticated animals.
First on offer is a museum from a long-gone era giving more information about the villagers and what archaeologists found on the site. Over 200 storage pits for preserving grain were found, as well as many cooking and eating utensils. There were also fishing and hunting tools.

Then you head to the next building to see the archaeological dig. 46 houses have been unearthed, which are either round or square in shape. At the village centre is a large house for the chief and public gatherings.

From Banpo metro station, take exit A and continue down the street past the new modern apartments and at the major intersection, turn left and you will see the museum on your left.
