Zermatt Photo Gallery - Gornergrat Bahn

Gornergrat Bahn opened in 1898 as the world's first electric cog railway. It rises from just across the main railway station in Zermatt to the viewing platform at 3089m for a beautiful view of the Matterhorn.

Webcams at the station and online show whether the top is sufficiently clear to make the trip worthwhile. There is no point paying all that money to be hidden inside a cloud.

Gornergrat Station : Mountain weather is unpredictable, and the skies magically cleared out at the top. Snow-capped mountains everywhere, walk uphill and up the stairs a bit for the viewing platform where you are on top of the world.

It is also worthwhile to make stops along the route to hike and enjoy the spectacular scenery. As long as you continue to travel in the direction of your ticket, making stops is allowed.

Rotenboden is at 2815m and is the first stop from the top.

You can also walk down from the top as well.

Continuing downhill, the next station is also worth a stop. Riffelberg is at 2582m.

From Riffelberg, head to the trails and walk downhill to the next stop at Riffelalp.

The trail is well signposted and not too difficult if going downhill.

After the rewarding hike, wait for the next train back to town at Riffelalp.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, the fare is 50% off. However, there is no need to buy a roundtrip. Instead, plan your hikes and stops because individual tickets may end up saving you money. Keep in mind stops are allowed in the direction of travel, so you need to do your math to optimize the ticket fares.
