Lake District Photo Gallery - Bowness Lake Walk

If taking the train into the Lake District, you will likely arrive in Windermere first. The town shares the same name as the lake but actually sits inland. To reach the lake, you need to take a bus or drive a short distance down to Bowness, whose history dates back to medieval times.

Lake Windermere is England's largest lake and has long been used to transport stone, minerals, charcoal, and woolen cloth. Besides the different cruises available, there is also a commuter ferry across a narrow stretch of the lake.

The centre of action is at Bowness Pier. But be sure to walk along the coastal path along the lake from here to Ferry Nab, which is very scenic. You get to see the lake, mountains, yachts, and there are benches to sit down, relax, and enjoy a snack. There are a few restaurants along the way near the Bowness Pier side, although the town centre itself has plenty more options to eat.

The local council operates a ferry that can take cars, pedestrians, and even horses across the lake from Ferry Nab to Far Sawrey. It is a short journey that takes only about 10 minutes.
